She graduated from the University of Minnesota where she studied Visual Arts and Art History and is beginning her twelfth year of researching traditional methods in creating color from plant and insect-based pigments and the cultural significance of these processes. Donovan is a founding member for the Rice County Indigo Collective where she and other artists plant and farm Japanese Indigo for her artwork and others. She is a recipient of the multiple Minnesota State Arts Board Grants and has completed several artist residencies in Europe and South America, learning from local natural dye experts. Emily regularly hosts artist demonstrations and volunteers in schools, and loves teaching her process. She also enjoys collaborating and foraging materials with local gardeners and naturalists to learn more about native plants. Donovan’s art can be found in multiple private and public collections internationally. Feather Thief is a work created on paper with natural pigments including locally sourced goldenrod and black walnut as well as madder root. This abstract piece looks at attempts to capture and control nature- based on a real-life story of the robbery of valuable feathers from the natural history museum in London.
